Ok, I turned my PC on this morning, to find it running incredibly slowly, and there is no Taskbar or Start Menu. I can run most programs normally, but others fail to work at all.
My virus scan shows no virus, the taskbar is set to on top of all windows and is not set to hide, and I have tried the xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall script.
I have tried to run explorer.exe through task manager to no avail. When I enter safemode, the entire system freezes.
There is a thin grey line at the bottom which I can right-click on and get the properties of the taskbar, but when I try to drag it upwards, nothing happens.
I cannot drag any desktop icons, or anything at all.And sadly I have lost the XP disc that came with the PC.
Can anyone suggest anything that might help?

... try "restore" in safe mode by tapping F8 key @ boot-up
... or: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...
... lines 117, 164, 195b, 243 with "reg" files download, right click "merge"
.... I would try restore!

I tried to get into safemode, but the system freezes, and eventually shuts itself off.
Also I cannot access the link you suggested.
It says: Content Encoding Error.

Maybe look at these ----
Taskbar Is Missing When You Log On to Windows

I can't do any of the things that Microsoft suggest as I can't get into safemode.
Also, the second solution suggested failed too.

Copy the below listed text into notepad and save to your desktop as a reg file. Then, execute it, confirming you want to make the Registry change.

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP

I have tried to access system restore and get the message: System Restore is unable to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and run System Restore again.
I've restarted time and time again, and I get the same message each time.

Then again, possible your harddrive is not running up to par,
since everything running slow.
Mechanical devices do crap out.
Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.Cannot fix Safe-Mode without XP CD.

Try cleaning ALL edge connectors with a pencil eraser then pop the cards in and out a few times to clean the actual socket contacts. Include:
RAM
Graphics Card
SATA HDD connectors (if applicable).
PCI Express card (if applicable)Not very scientific I realise but many times oxidized edge connectors are the culprit, especially if you have disturbed anything inside recently.
some other bloke...

Had the same prob...Get an XP CD and boot from it then it will say there is a windows installation already there and give you an option to repair it. choose repair and your PC will be back to normal. and your files won't be deleted
worked for me, good luck
