(I tried to post this in the '98 forum, but wasn't allowed, because I'm on XP.)

My cousin can't connect (he has dial-up). The only port listed in his Device Manager is his printer port.
I suggested he unplug his computer for 1/2 hour and then plug it back in. (He'd left it on for 3 days, straight)

In the meantime, I'm hoping someone on here can let me know how he can get his ports to show up and give some suggestions to being able to help him out.

His modem diagnostics say "working properly"

TIA

"My cousin can't connect (he has dial-up)."

What, if any error messages, do/does your cousin get?? Thanks. Something to do with ports, no doubt, yes. And do explain, a little more in detail what you do mean by can't connect, thanks. Also, who provides the dial-up service, thanks. What type of modem, is it?? Thanks.

And what did you mean by this;
"(I tried to post this in the '98 forum, but wasn't allowed, because I'm on XP.)"

Please explain, just wondering :-), thanks. And with what has happened, makes me think your cousin has 98, yes. Is that correct, or not? Just an idea, thought.

per, i think he's talking about com ports :-)

i'm still not sure which OS he's referring to ... xp or 98.

1st check in the bios (integrated peripherals) if the com ports are enabled and set to 'auto' ... in windows 98 with older modems sometimes additional (soft) ports needed to be installed manually (add/remove hardware > ports > com port). some of these modems had jumpers to be configured for the appropriate com port ... those were the days :-)

so, be a bit more specific. tell us which OS and modem you are talking about

Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

mattie- I think you are right. It was a modem port he wanted not a in/out port. Thx.

Thanks...I guess I didn't make myself very clear. He's using '98 (that's why I tried to post in the '98 forum)

I see the link you gave doesn't work with '98...unless I'm not reading it correctly. (I'm far from bein' a whiz on these things.) ;)

He has "no dial tone detected" when he tries to connect. He has plugged a phone into the computer and it worked, he just can't connect to the internet.

RJN, you need to indicate the failing system's specs when you post, not the system that you are posting with.

Have him try removing and adding back Dial up networking in the Control Panel/Networking window.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

ham30...Sorry, but, I don't know his spec's for his computer. All I know is what he's told me.

I did just call him to have him try your suggestion. He was to call back if it worked...he hasn't called back. :(

Thanks for tryin'.

btw...I asked him how long it's been since he blew the dust out...he's never done that, but will go get a can of air.

He also went in to Add New Hardware and got his COM1 to show up in the Device Manager, at least.

COM3 is a virtual Com Port used by PCI Modems, wether or not the other comm ports show up is irrelevent.

Go to

Control Panel
Phone and Modem Options

You have a Diagnostic Tab some where in there.

RJN,

"He has "no dial tone detected" when he tries to connect. He has plugged a phone into the computer and it worked, he just can't connect to the internet."

Start with the simple first. Is the phone line connected, to the right port. (pluged into the correct one) Has this connection worked before?? If it has, any changes done just before it didn't. Has he tried, re-installing, or updating modem drivers?? Re-installing the modem, for that matter. Has he tried removing, and making a new connection for IE?? Has he, I guess I should be saying he or she. Nevermind, just looked again, it's he ;-) Has he tried unchecking "Wait for a dial tone before dialing", in the modem properties??

CrazyOne
p.s. inverto, think that's been done, and no problems. Would have to go back and look. But, I think they have. Not to sure about my memory, age and all ;-)

He's done all that, and now he's stuck in safe mode and can't get out. He's unplugged it, plugged it back in, hit the re-set button...shut it off and re-booted and it's still in safe mode. How does he get out of that?

Is it possible that his modem is shot, even tho the diagnostics say it's workin' just fine?

He's yet to get a can of air to clean the tower. Could be a short in there. A dog and a cat and not ever cleanin' it, can't be REAL good on it.
