Missing O/S After Clean Boot

Laptop suddenly started hanging randomly when selecting applications - Particularly IE or CD-ROM. Checked for virus - none found. Machine then started hanging when re-booting. Not always, but always at the same point - at the point where all the dots are flashing across the XP screen.
Decided to try a clean boot using Guided Help. Got to the re-boot point and now get error message "Missing Operating System".
The machine doesn't have a floppy drive and I don't have a recovery disk as I got the machine second hand. It does have a genuine O/S installed and it does have a sticker.

What guided help did you use and how did you get to where you are now?
Operating Costs = the cost of operating a business Profits = revenues over and above the operating costs. Taxes = operating costs mandated by gov. TaxPayer = what you are called by the gov.
