this has happenned to me three times in one week. first time i was clean installing and after copying the files and rebooting the problem appeared. second, on another computer working fine for a day and upon a reboot, with half a dozen intervening reboots, same problem. third time same as second. my setup is same as yours so i suspect it has something to do with boot magic. my interim solution was to make a logical hidden partition copy of a working xp with partition magic so if it happens again i can be back in business in 15 minutes. have not had the problem in two days but suspect it is not gone. tried upgrading boot magic from 1.01 that appeared on pm4.01 to 7.0, see what happens. also got a copy of hal.dll from working computer and overwrote the supposed corrupt version in DOS, still said it was corrupt so dont think it really is but xp sure does.

I too have had this same problem three or four times in the last month. Is Microsoft listening? Just curious, anybody get this error under FAT32? Everytime I've gotten it its been in a NTFS partition of XP (while dual-booting PC-DOS in a separate FAT partition).

I would like to share my eXPerience. I have multiboot system with 3 Fat32 Partitions: C:\Win98 D:\Win2000 E:\WinXP Win98 and Win2000 are just fine. When I installed XP and it ran fine for about 3 days and the fatel hal.dll error. I have re-installed XP for about 7 times.. It runs fine for a while then after a reboot or shutdown, I get the hal.dll error during boot up. I'm not working with XP and I will damn XP till Microsoft or anybody gets a fix for this..
