When I use Search, I get the message "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found." I do not want to run set-up again. Does anyone know what this file is?

I also have this; in fact it seems to be a common problem. One suggestion I read was to reinstall the NIC driver/TCP driver, this seemed to work for some but not others. Something that I have found is that if I'm on the NET, then it works ok. I have my systems on a small network with a dialup router to the net, I suspect that when search starts, it attempts to contact the world as it see's it e.g. all DNS servers etc., to enable computer searching or som'it. As these servers aren't available, then maybe it crud's out.... (it's only a theory).

Yes - it does work if you are connected to the internet. If you connect to the internet and run Search you can then change the preferences to remove the animated character which seems to work and search will run when you are not connected to the net (so far anyway !!)

We have the same problem and it is intermittent. It is happening on our base image. I ran the MS fix 'SFC /scannow'and that did not work. I then made sure I had all the updates and still no work. I then try another time to print screen the error and guess what it worked... HUH??? It comes and goes and will be a real problem if this is rolled out to our 1500 users in July.....someone please help...
Note: We are using IP & IPX and the Novell XP client...anyone else here using netware??

Try this and let me know the results. Click on Start\Run.
On the command line, enter %windir%/inf
Find the file srchasst.inf in the list, right-click and select Install. Hopefully, this will resolve your search issue. It took care of my problem.

That bloody simple hey!
The srchasst.inf solution worked for me. :)I' been searching for months for this fix and tried all the other suggestions bar a reinstall, to no avail.
Thanks mercury!!!!!!!!

just run microsoft update and you could choose with update suite with your problem. after then your search will have another animated character (like office's character)
