Name: Danny
Major headache. I recently installed some Norton products and removed the older versions but accidentally let it delete some shared files. Now, when the computer starts i get a missing file dialogue box saying 'can't find zoneband.dll' and no programs will open at all. The system tray bit opens though and as does the start menu etc. Can't shut down though and system restore won't work. I've tried to re-install some programs i removed to get the file back but it won't let me install anything and i can't open 'My Computer'. Any help would really be appreciated before the computer flies gets thrown out of the window.

That file has nothing to do with Norton, it is a file used by ZONEALARM. Have you deleted Zonealarm?

yes., and i thought it might be that so i reinstalled it but the no change still....i've tried unistalling it again but still the same thing!!!

Danny, Go to the link below and click Windows XP Fixes/ File Associations Fixes/Exe File Association Fix and download & run it. Hopefully it will correct the unability to open your programs. If you can't access the Internet you would have to download it on another computer than transfer it to the messed up computer via CD or Floppy then run it.

Thanks for the help...unfortunately it's still not working. Installed the file in safe mode (where everything works fine) but it still won't open anything when booted normally....any more ideas?

Try this software...small and free...It cleans up left over crap from sloppy program uninstalls...Zone alarm is real bad for that. I would uninstall what you want in safe mode (since everything works there)
Program is called reg cleaner...works very well.http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml
Altho I have never tried running it in safe mode I see no reason why it wont do the trick. After you are done removing the programs you don't want run the regcleaner...the first tab that comes up is "software" just check off the programs you uninstalled, hit "remove checked" reboot after done.
Good luck

Still no luck unfortunately. The file it's saying is missing was actually there as it showed it when i uninstalled zone alarm again, which is a little confusing. Thanks for the suggestion though...Any more ideas people!?!

Danny, Check out the links/threads at the link below which has quite a few hits on that file.

Have tried those links and followed the uninstall procedures etc but still no joy. I think it might be more than just the missing zonealarm file...not sure that it would cause all these problems. Any more suggestions anyone?

Is there a way to remove programs whilst in safe mode apart from by using either the programs uninstall or windows uninstall, as neither will work with some programs i installed shortly before the problem.

There is a program uninstall tab in that reg cleaner program I told you about above..I never tried it so I cant say it will or will not give you joy.
here is another link after looking around awhile

there is lots of info in the post that might help.
something else I think was missed....Did you disable zonealarm from starting up through the zone alarm control panel?
Until someone comes up with a better idea...i would try this...
since you can only do stuff in safe mode...reinstall zone alarm from there
open the ZA panel, go to overview, then preferances tab, uncheck "load zone alarm when windows starts" reboot.
now you should be able to uninstall it from normal mode. Then clean up the left over stuff it left behind from the info in links in above responses....I don't know it that will help...but something to try. I would also post your questions/problem on zone alarm's forum. Likely get more help there.
Good luck
