Hi All,
I hope someone can help with this. I have 2 HDD, 1 with 4 partitions and the other HDD with 2 partitions. The 2nd HDD letters are "D" and "H". All drive icons show the correct icon, but the "H" drive, the icon is lost and shows the default windows icon for things that it does not have icons for ( just a square box with 1 corner folded).Does anyone know how I can fix this. It drives me nuts. It used to show the correct icon, but now doesn't. I have disconnected the HDD, and rebooted, then shut down, reconnected, hoping that it might restore the icon, but no. It must be a bug in the registry, but I don't know where. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Colin

The only thing I can suggest is to delete the IconCache.db file [formally called ShellIconCache in 9x] which is located in the:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data folder
and reboot to see if that brings any joy. It should return [sometimes] afresh so don't worry about deleting it.
You could also add the Drive Icons key in the Registry to give a different icon to each drive as well but see if the first idea works before doing that.
You can also change that nefarious WDI but that's another story for another day.

To Recycled Member,
I have tried as you suggested, deleting the IconCache.db , but no, it has not restored the missing icon. I'm open to more suggestions.
Thanks,
Colin

This may not work for this but open explorer, collapse all drives up to My Computer so you only see them in the right pane and hit refresh, sometimes when my drive icons get messed up this is what I do but mine usually get a different icon , not the WDI. You could type H:\ in the Registry 'find' and see what result that brings or if possable reformat that drive if it's conveinient but I doubt if that would do anything either.
Perhaps a System Restore to an earlier setup might do it if you have one.
I'm outta ideas for this one, sorry.

To Recycled member,
Thanks for you troubles. You mentioned a System Restore, the funny thing is, that this missing icon episode, happened after a "System Restore", that I did a couple of months ago. It is just one of those annoying "Windows" things, although I must admit, that WinXP is so much better than Win98, as far as mysterious happenings go.
Thanks again,
Colin
