you can try to repair your windows by
boot up with XP CD, when you see welcome to XP setup, go to repair my windows R
from c prompt type: chkdsk /p
that may take several mins depend on performance. after that reboot your system and see if works

In TaskManager you can try File / Search, navigate to C:\Windows folder and then select the explorer.exe.

I would recommand to use some online scanning service, because some virus, spyware or trojans infects the antivirus program or disables it's functions.
My brother have had such problem and his antivirus program hasn't found anything.
An online scanning service found 30 different types of viruses, spyware and trojans.
