Hi!
I really tried to find this using the normal methods. I can't find the info. Maybe I'm tired.
Does Win XP Home come with Microsoft Word? I just ran my MS Works CD and installed works. I have word pad. I thought I had MS Word. I don't have it now.

Thanks,

Jimi.

No it doesn't, Word is part of Office, and as such has to be bought seperately.

You can purchase Word separately without purchasing Office.

Win XP Home does not come with Word. You said you had installed MS Works. MS Works 2002 comes with Word as part of the package. Look carefully as Word has been part of Works for quite some time. You can buy Word Seperatly or purchase the Office Suite.

Hmmmm. Vedy intderestink. I had a problem with Gateway that I've gone into detail on XP forum message number 73570. I did a clean reinstall and didn't have any of the 3 disks that Gateway provides with it's new computers. They are - a red disk: restoration and driver cd, a blue disk: contains WIN XP, and a yellow disk: contains applications. So I had to buy them all before I could do the clean reinstall (format hard drive). I actually paid Gateway for the red disk, $30.00, and at Best Buy I actually purchased the full XP Home disk, $190.00, and also bought at Best Buy Encarta 2004 (reference library plus dvd) and Microsoft Streets & Trips 2004. I was going to buy a package of software that contained 4 different programs, but I figured all I needed was Microsoft works 7.0. I bought that one because the 4 pack had some things on it that I already had and it was cheaper to buy the ones I've listed (with rebates). Now, today, I ran and installed works 7.0. I have the works program and word pad. I thought I had Word too, but I don't. I DID think that it was included in Works 7.0 but now I don't know for sure. I DID think that I had it before I did the clean install. Now I don't know for sure. I'm going to look over the works some more and wait for more posts. Maybe I can run works again, I don't know. I don't really need word (I use word pad for simple stuff) but I want to have a complete working computer with all the programs I should have. I just can't remember if it was in WIN XP or works or a seperate software application.

Everything else has gone very well since the clean install and I've learned an amazing amount of knowledge about my computer, XP, system restore, formatting XP, ect. so it hasn't been all bad. Plus I've been so busy I haven't had time to write a letter of complaint to Gateway yet so there is still a possibility that they might do something for me.

Thanks to all for the posts. I'll follow up and let anyone who is interested how this all comes out.

Jimi.

Microsoft Word (any version) is part of Microsoft Office (any version) and is not to be confused with Microsoft Works nor WordPad. Also has to be purchased separately. So if your OS is XP it is then recommended that u use OfficeXP but not mandatory. If u are going to purchase any office client I would recommend u buy Microsoft Office 2003 which has a new application called OneNote, which is for note taking when in class using your notebook.

No, Wordpad is a separate simple MS program.

Word doesn't come with XP (a la rwinegar)unless the manufacturer of the computer (in this case Dell) chose to include it. The manufacturer can put pretty much what it wants in the case.

Microsoft office is a large program (I believe) that I don't need. The only thing I'd need Word for would be writting a letter and I can do that with Word pad or Works. I think I'll leave well enough alone. It was tough enough to figure out how to get microsoft photo editor 3.01 to work on my computer when XP kept telling me that I didn't have the correct Graphic Importer to run the program. I have it running now, so I think I'll relax and scan some photo's of my Grandkids. Thanks to all for the EXTREME educational experience.

I just can't let it go completely yet. Let me understand. You can or cannot purchase Microsoft Word (that will be compatible with WIN XP Home) by itself? You have to buy something like Win Office and then you will have it within that program? If you CAN buy Microsoft Word by itself, what should I look for when I hit Best Buy or CompUSA? I don't run an office, I don't have a business, I don't go to school classes and don't have a notebook. I just "live" in my computer room here in my house and study operating systems and read the forums on this website. I tweak my computer and listen to music. And I'd like to have Word to make my computer complete.

rwinegar: you have word because you have an oem version of windows xp, not retail. oem copys are basically computers loaded with a bumch of oem software that are all pretty bad. retail does not have it, it has nothing except windows movie maker, media player, internet explorer, and the very basics. that doesnt make oem better, oem is customed designed bye your computer company, meaning it has a bunch of stuff that you will never use and the company probably blocked off a bunch of things on your computer so you cant screw around with anyting and break your pc so they wont have to use there warrenty with you.

so no, windows xp home retail ed. that you buy in stores seperately from a pc does not have word.

If you want an up to date copy of Word the latest version is Word XP (aka Word 2002). You can buy it as a standalone product, as part of MS Works, or as part of Office XP. (aka Office 2002).

standalone Word is obviously the cheapest way, Office is the most expensive option but also includes full versions of Excel, Powerpoint, Access and Outlook.

MS Works is a sort of "halfway house", somewhere between the two in terms of features and pricing. As far as I'm aware though, the version of Word included with is the full version.

Hope that clarifies.

Dan
