I recently brought a game but it unfortunately it wont work on XP when looking for help files/forums on Google, I read about someone else who had the same problem as I have with there copy of the game he said he used a Virtual PC. I searched for virtual pc on Google and found Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 after reading about what Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is I thought that might help.

I download and installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 all was fine last time I played this game was on my old PC which had Windows 98 as the OP so I thought I would install Windows 98 onto the Virtual PC using the Windows 98 Disc I got with my old PC.

But I had some problems when installing Windows 98 it brought things up saying something like (can't find this file and can't find that file) I clicked on skip this file it seemed to continue to install just fine. But it’s not working fine every time I start the Virtual PC it says (Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or Windows applications) these are the 4 files it can’t find (vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd and vnetbios.vxd) it says to press any key to continue which I do. After the vnetbios.vxd it brings up a Windows Networking error message that reads (Unable to load the dynamic link library, msnp32.dll, The system cannot find the file specified, Some or all of the following feature is not available) I click on the ok button and then it loads into Windows 98 screen and everything seems fine.

I installed the game all was fine until I tried to play it the DARN Virtual PC doesn’t detect my Graphics card, is there anyway to make the Virtual PC detect all the hardware that my PC has? And to uninstall/reinstall Windows 98 properly so it will hopefully start up without any problems?

If you have no need for networking while in Virtual mode with Win98 then you can remove networking capabilities from Win98.

Googling for the errors will yeild many hits. One link may help you.

Virtual PC has its own graphic card and that can't be replaced however what virtual machine are we getting? Virtualization is just the process to replace real hardware with virtual devices.

You can install/reinstall Windows 98 inside the Virtual PC as many times you want, just perform an accurate install for both the operating system and the game.

VPC is not your issue. Either the disk you have is bad (defects/damaged) or an OEM that won't work correctly with VPC.

Almost every Win98 game can be run in compatibility mode. Many times you have to run both the installer and the game in compatibility mode.

I tried to install it on a home system but it would not install at all. The 2004 version would just complain and install and run fine.

Thanks to you all for responding.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 installed fine and works fine, it is the windows 98 OS that I'm having problems with. I'm trying to install it using the Windows 98 disc that came with my first PC all those years ago. But it keeps asking for a floppy disc while installing, the only 2 floppy discs I have are the reboot one that came in the software bundle that I got with the PC and I don't think it is asking for that, the second disk is a Windows 98 Start Up Disk that my brother made at some point.

I think I will have a look and see if we still have the old PC and try the game on that.

Responce no4 Jefro you said (Many times you have to run both the installer and the game in compatibility mode) I have tried running the game in compatibility mode but how do you run the installer in compatibility mode?

To run the setup in Compatibility mode, right click the Setup icon, click Properties, then click the Compatibility tab, then check the box beside "Run this program in compatibility mode for," and then in the dropdown box select Windows 98. Click Apply and OK.
