Like a lot of XP users, I receive a yellow shield in my taskbar every Update Tuesday, reminding me that MS has some changes ready for XP.

I've never had a problem updating - and still don't. Never had an update cause a problem with my operating system.

Here's the deal. After doing the monthly update and rebooting, the yellow MS shield re-appears in the taskbar once the PC is back online; as if indicating I didn't update, or had an incomplete update. I know that's false for two reasons: My installation history at the MS site says that all updates were succesfully installed, and to confirm it, I can find the updates installed when I locate them with Windows Explorer.

Clicking on the yellow shield brings up the dialog box, I click on Install, and the shield disappears - never to return until the next Update Tuesday.

Again, this hasn't caused me any problems. I'm simply curious if anyone else has experienced this anomaly.

Thanks

I posted a fix for a similar problem several weeks ago. Try this and see if it fixes it...

If your XP updater wants to keep going back and get the same updates over and over it may be a reg entry not getting updated.

Go to Start / Search / For File or Folders.

Select "Local Hard Drive C: under "Look in".

In the Search box type in: datastore.edb

Make sure to place checks next to Advanced Options, Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders, then click on "Search Now".

When you find the "DataStore.edb" file, right-click on it and select "Rename" and rename it to: DataStore.old

Reboot your computer, then visit the Windows Update site.
