Hello guys,
I have been hearing from a couple of guys in IT from different companies (I'm a network admin so I keep in contact with a lot of IT guys) that SP2 will kill pirated windows xp sometime next week.

Is there any truth involved in this?
or is this a Xp myth?

None of us here at the computing.net forums are concerned about that, as we are not pirates.

That doesn't mean we regard Microsoft as being above reproach.

If the XP installation on your computer crashes next week, let us know, and someone here will try to find a resolution to whatever is causing your problem.

Beauty of the high sierra,
and she's looking out for you.

Not what I heard. All M$ told us is that comes April 12, SP2 will be automatically download to your PC unless you have turned off the auto update. You will also have problem accessing Windows Update site if they recognize your OS as pirated.

Another thing Microsoft is doing is disabling Internet activation for all Xp product keys on the COA labels for OEM packs. Which I guess will help cut down on piracy. Especially the selling of pirated keys.

Curious as to how the it guys expect ms to "kill" the O/S. Is the machine going to explode or is it just going to not boot?

I dont expect them to be right, personally like I said just wanted to know if there was any truth behind it.

I'm not any of a big fan of pirates, but personally when guys like them causes trouble .. i'm the one they call in.

I had someone told me "disaster makes money" and thats exactly what im doing. Hopefully sp2 deactivates someones os that way they can call me in.

I have recently installed a copy of SP2 onto a friend's computer, and it would not let me install it because the CD key had been identified as being an illegal version. The setup for the SP simply wouldn't set it up.

As for Windows being "killed" if there is an illegal version running, I don't think those people will have to worry too much about their OS not working. They will more than likely just not be able to download and install the windows updates. But I guess we will see in a week what happens won't we?

To be honest, it doesn't matter what microsoft says. At the end of the day, if someone can protect something..... someone can break it. so "if" and "when" this happens, then after an hour, there will a way to "fix" it. so I don't pay attetion to anything like that, because it just don't matter lol. I'm happy to know I'm ok, and won't need to do the "work around", but it's funny to see the pirates work so hard to break a system, when their efforts would've put more money in their pockets to protect it.
nuff said I reckon!

This thing M$ is doing has already been implemented on a smaller scale to see if it works. I've already experiance a "authenticating windows xp" notice on two clients computers when trying to update to SP2. You have to download some scanning program and it gives you an authorizing code you must enter to download the update. It simply will not allow you to update your computer if it is a pirated copy. It will not destroy it or render it inoperable. You simply won't be able to do updates. I did read in the latest issue of Maximum PC that it will thank you for your interest in WinXP and offer you an option to purchase a key for a discounted price. Hmmm....M$ has to make money out of this as usual.

Per,

I forgot the name of the other site where you can download XP updates if you are barred from the official Windows Update site. Do you remember its name?

I won't consider retail XP Home Full Installation ($199) or retail XP Pro Full Installation ($299) pretty affordable.

Especially when it was built on top of NT code and while there are some changes underneath it all, it's basically a fancy interface on top of older technology.

Wow 'Xp user' those prices are seriously too high , i see where the piracy bit comes in (USA retailers!:)
uk prices home xp ed £55 approx $110
pro 99£ / $199, may be send you a few legit copies start a 'IT aid' or somthing.
Xp home ed is practically given away with baseline pc models in pc world , i cant even be bothered to build just too cheap. any reason why USA is so high priced?

'weve never had it so good ' springs to mind !

cheers

It's called THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING DOLLAR. Pick up a copy of the latest Time magazine. We in the US will be paying through the wahoo soon for just about everything. But let's make sure we still give BILLIONS in aid to those "less fortunate" OUTSIDE this great country.
