Microsoft Service Pack Question,

Microsoft handed out free Service Pack 2 disk which I ordered well over a year ago ,but never did downloaded .
There where so many different opinions regarding this issue in this Forum and I chickened out and turned the Automatic Up Date to "OFF" position permanently ,I used about 6/8 free tools and never had any problems I do clean My PC including Disk Derfragment and never downloaded Porn either .
My question is : as I'm getting a more powerful new PC , should I download the Window Service Pack 2 disk which I got over 1 or near 2 years ago on my new PC and keep the Automatic Up Date on "ON" position permanently on ,or use those free tools below I mention .
Zone Alarm Free Download
AVG Free Down Load
PCWorld Ad-Aware Personal
PCWorld Spybot Search and Destroy
PCWorld SpywareGuard v2.2
PCWorld SpywareBlaster v3.4
PCWorld.com - CWShredder
C Cleaner Free down load
Any opinion is very much appreciated ,many thanks.

I would keep the OS up to date and install SP2 on your old machine. In terms of your new machine, if you bought it and it came preloaded with XP it will have SP2 already installed. If it doesn't, (which would be very odd) install SP2. Keeping your OS up to date helps patch vulnerabilities that are discovered in the OS. Such as in Windows XP pre SP2, all ports are open, SP2 closed all the ports except the obvious ones such as port 80. Hence removing an obvious vulnerability. But thats my 2 cents.

If the new PC is OEM (Sony, HP, Compaq, etc) it will have SP2. You should then download all post SP2 updates.

It's all a matter of personal choice IMO. I never installed any win98 updates and only installed SP2 on XP when applications I needed to run required it. I don't allow any auto updates.

I also stay away from porn and warez sites.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Firehawk,Xp User and ham30 ,thanks for you opinion , each of you have a valued point.I asked Dell yesterday and been told SP2 is preloaded ,what drew me, when I hassled the sales person about free SP2 disk ,He told me it's £6.00 I declined ,hence my question.
P.S. Noooo .....I didn't order a Dell printer ,I ordered a Cannon Prixma iP5200 .
