Hi All,

I installed a new program (CleanCache) that requires the .NET software which i acquired from Windows Update. This has added the ASP.NET user account to my machine which now brings up the somewhat annoying login screen every time XP starts.

I've researched previous posts regarding this issue, but the only advice i've found so far is to remove the .NET software altogether, which will in turn delete the additional user account.

Can i simply delete the ASP.NET user account without effecting the functionality of the .NET software or the program that requires it?

Thanks much,

Jim

Open Control Panel, click on "users", click on advanced, uncheck the crtl+alt+del requirement, then close everything back to your desktop.

Next, Click Start, then Help. Type in "autologon", without the quotes. The last entry, I think number 15, will tell you how to edit the registry to enable autologons. If this is a "secure" system, beware, the password is in plain text in the registry.

I have tested this and it works. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, get someone who is to do this for you. (The instructions assume you are familiar with it).

We plan on rolling this out to our schools' labs soon, since they don't require a password anyway.

NET Framework

http://www.jsifaq.com/subl/tip5500/rh5595.htm

If you don't need the .NET Framework update for Windows, and MOST people do not, don't get it.

The account it adds is called ASP.NET Machine. It is in User Accounts in Control Panel, and it IS SAFE to delete.

Log into your normal account, open User Accounts and delete the ASP.NET Machine account.

Another way .

Start > Run , copy & paste "control userpasswords2" without the quotes & hit Enter .

Highlight the username you want to autologin and uncheck the box and hit Apply . You will then be prompted for your password .

.NET is primarily a marketing term for a set of products and technologies that Microsoft is creating to move personal and enterprise computing beyond the PC desktop and into a distributed Internet-based environment.

In other words, Microsoft and others software companies will offer server-side (software program) distribution. .NET will eliminate software programs distributed by CD-ROM.

Thanks for the responses... as i said in my post, i DO have a program that requires Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, which is why i downloaded it. I just needed to know if i can delete the user account ASP.NET and still have the software work. I'll look into your suggestions.

Hi,

If you have Powertoys for Win XP from Microsoft (you can search for it on Google), install TweakUI.

Then you will be able to access many Windows settings that would normally require editing the registry. One of the things you can do is this:

Open Powertoys for WinXP and look for the "Login" item on the left side.
Click on the word "Logon" and look at the options in the right pane. You can uncheck the accounts you don't want to see when you start Windows.

Then you should also click on the [+] sign next to "Logon" and check out the "Autologon" item, too.

Finally, click on Apply/OK and restart Windows.

Good luck.
Juan

leave the user account ASP.NET and manage it from there.

So, you should

Sorry I made a mistake in my post above.

Where I wrote "Open Powertoys for WinXP and look for the "Login" item on the left side", I should have written "Logon" instead of "Login".

Thanks for the help folks. To resolve the issue, i ran "control userpasswords2" as suggested, and unchecked the box for "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer." Worked great... i no longer get the login screen, and didn't have to delete the ASP.NET user account. Nice tip!
