my Sony digital 8 camcorder is connected to my computer via usb. when i try to use windows movie maker, and my camera is in playback mode, and i want to capture footage on to my pc, it gives me a message:

A video capture device was not detected. Verify that a device is turned on and connected properly, and then try again.

I dontknow, everything seems to be connected right. What is the problem?

Did you install the usb drivers for the camera? Possibly xp doesn't have the drivers for this camera in its libary.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

I had a similar problem with my camcorder in Windows Movie Maker. However, I was able to capture the video using Roxio Capture, and then import the video into Movie Maker. Your camcorder should have come with either a program that captures the video or a driver. Check your owners manual.

You need a firewire connection and capture card to capture video.

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Ewen, you are not entirely correct.

I have a Sony Digital 8 camera that I have uploaded the video using first, USB and then after purchasing the expensive IEEE1394 cable connector I uploaded using Firewire.

Celestia, It is imperative (according to the Sony manual) that you install the Sony USB drivers before ever connecting the camera to the PC. If you do not then they provide lengthy instructions on how to remove it all from the PC if done in the incorrect order.

Once completely removed then install the drivers and then connect the camera.

My Sony camera came with USB drivers and did not come with any Firewire drivers. When I connected it to the Firewire connection WinXP did it's thing to see it and it worked fine.

Even WinXP needed the Sony USB driver disc.

You can, for a price, add a firewire adapter card and buy the firewire cable. All for about $60 US or less. Firewire is nice. It downloads the file as it is on the camera in digital form whereas the USB converts it to analog.

Regards,
Bryan
