FYI,Microsoft just released December 11th this freeware app ,I cannot really tell you how good of a removal tool it is from exprience ,however from what others are rating it 5 our of 5 ,it seems pretty good and the best part is its freeware app ! Iam in the proccess of downloading the tool as I write this post .My only reason for posting about this freeware app was to let others know who may be interested ! I apoligize for not having a link to provide you with however a google search will help you easily find the tool , its a 8.5 M.B. download !

If you downloaded that app you did have a link. All you need do is copy and paste the URL from the address bar while visiting the site. Automatically becomes a link upon pasting it here at CN.

Haven't looked at this release but I think it is just an update.

The Malicious Software Removal Tool (Click Me) is automatically deployed to our desktop every second Tuesday of the month through Windows Update.

Do you or don't you have Automatic Windows Update turned on?

Yes I do have automatic update turned on ,however my PC did not have this piece of freeware installed on it ? Also after the download completed I ran a quick scan of my PC and it reported that I did not have any infection on my PC ,howeve my ? is that it seems it does not actaully install the application on your system ? You have to use the download to run the application , does not create shortcut option on installation process ? I downloaded it to my desktop ,however after seeing it did not actually install a app I dragged it to the My Documents folder where it now sits. My ? is where is the best place to put this app and is this the normal way to run this program by using the "DOS" looking icon to run it each time you want to scan your PC ,it gives you 3 or so options a quick scan another option and a full system scan. Any infromation on this application you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated !
Thank You ,Nick

It's installed transparently then disappear during the Windows Update installation process. In other words, if it doesn't detect the presence of any Gremlins on your PC it goes away.

On the other hand, if it does detect Gremlins running amock in your PC, you will get a big popup box telling you what you need to do to get rid of them.

I think you will find the tool is a "run once" program that runs itself after download via Windows Update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830 It isn't a substitute for a full blown anti virus program.

I never expected this app to replace a anti-virus app ,I have Norton Internet Security Suite 2006 installed on my system and always keep my virus definitions up to date ! What ended up getting me even though the Norton Suite has spyware and trojan protection also was a trojan that crippled my system so quickly that no-one would have had time to save it .In the end a fresh install as my only fix ,if I had the protection from this trojan on my system it would have been blocked .I've been told sometimes the protection apps do not have a block setup for either a virus or trojan if its so new they are not even aware of it yet or if they are they have not released any protection from it yet to download ?

Most folks here would advise you to find a better and cheaper (free) AV. I recommend that when your subscribtion expires or even before, look around for a different AV. Look online for AV reviews.
