You need to configure your soundcard Leonard.
I have a c-media card (It's ace lol), but it can be fiddly. I'm not totally sure how to configure it, but you need to goto control panel/audio and play with the settings. if you tell me which c-media card you have, I may be able to help further then.
I have a current problem where my input is coming out of only 2 speakers instead of the normal 6.
in the advanced menu, you can change the configuration of the card, so you may have to change that (it changes microphonr to audio out for some reason, so that may be the culprit.
It doesn't deem to be anything wrong with the soundcard itself, just our lack of info on how to mess with it.
I'm going to the main site to find out an answer to my problem, so if I find any help for you, I'll post it here.

Good luck.

This is a guess. Some sound cards (very few) have microphone inputs that are designed for 'powered' mics. These cards have a stereo mic jack and require a microphone with a stereo plug. It's not a stereo audio input. The power for the mic is supplied by one of the stereo connections.
