I bought a Labtec stereo headset because I want to use Skype. It's plugged in correctly, and I can hear the caller perfectly, but the mike gives no response. The microphone is selected in Volume Control and Recording Control, and I've tried it out both muted and unmuted (as there seem to be differing opinions on this - the headset manufacturer's hotline said it should be muted, but elsewhere I've been advised that it shouldn't..) I have had no luck with Sound Recorder either.

I took the headset to work with me today (OS is XP Pro, driver is SoundMAX Digital Audio) and it works perfectly there. But at home, with all the same settings (but driver VIA AC'97), no go.

Any ideas?

Update your audio drivers, check also that you put it in the right place.

Update the audio drivers, my tuner card does the same thing, I wont get sound in the record mode unless I update the drivers.

OK, I tried to download what appears to be the right update, "VIA AC'97 Audio Combo Driver 5.80c" from this page:

http://www.download.cor/3000-2120_4-10364002.html?tag=lst-0-1

It's shown in the Device Manager with a yellow exclamation mark over the icon, so I assume I haven't downloaded it fully/correctly?

Also, upon restarting the PC, Skype puts up a message about no recording device - so now it appears I've unwittingly got rid of the old driver, but the new one's not working.

Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to do this, and exactly where I should download to? I have never done this before and am no IT pro.

You should just have to download the file, then open it and double click the setup file or .exe not the one that has the globe neither. After clicking the .exe it will load the installer, then ask you if you want to install it and then to restart, should be all set then.

WOO-HOO!

Don't know what I did last evening when the download didn't work, but today I went into Device Manager and clicked the Uninstall button, then removed everything I'd downloaded for the installation. Then I started all over again, downloading again from the Internet page, and this time it's worked perfectly.

Thanks EVER so much.
