Mic Trouble

OS: WinXp Home SP1
CPU/Ram: 1.8ghz p4/512mb ddr

I am having probs with my mic. i have Avance AC97 audio and have re-installed the drivers and still no luck. my brother installed some mic warp software and after that it stopped and i un-installed it and didn't work. could that prog have fried my mic or is there something im missing?

Is the Mic un-muted in Windows Volume Control.
If Microphone is not displayed in V.C., then click Options, then Properties, check mark the

Mic box to get it displayed.

go into:
control panel> sounds and audio devices properties> audio

Check that the default device for sound recording is set as your Avance audio.

Likewise, also check:
control panel> sounds and audio devices properties> voice

and then click 'test hardware' which will run through some checks for you.
