I needed to produce a Web archive (.mht) file to accommodate a folder of image
slices, a folder of .jpg files and a .html/javascript image viewer I have written.

With the folders and viewer file grouped separately in a holding folder, the image
viewer works perfectly, cycling through the .jpg files. It also works perfectly when the Web archive file was produced from Interner Explorer and used on its own.

I made an auto-start CD containing the .mht file and confirmed that the viewer
worked on my PC. The problem was that the same disc, on another PC and
on two different laptops, produced the viewer but showed blanks where the slices for
the roll-over buttons should be. (Clicking the blanks still triggered the javascript but
the .jpg images were unavailable). All three machines had XP SP2 installed with
explorer 6.0.2900

Trawling through Microsoft's support site has turned up Article 891019 which shows
that this is a known bug with Web archive files and pointed me to a hotfix
download involving two .dll files. Before downloading them I checked my system and
discovered that they were both already installed! When checked, The other
machines had either one or both dll files missing or had earlier versions of just one file.

Out of curiosity, I produced the Web archive file on a laptop with one, earlier
version .dll (Cdosys.dll) present and incorporated this .mht file into the auto-start disc. This worked perfectly on the laptop but produced the same, missing slices on my PC with both, up-to-date .dll files present.

So when is a fix not a fix?

KenH, SWAG, may be totally all wet, but my gut's telling me the problem stems from your machine not knowing what to use to open the blanks during assembly. If you either don't have anything selected or have the wrong thing selected, you'll get a blank in return. Mine usually produce the red 'X', but a white page wouldn't surprise me.

Thanks for that. Mine are crosses too but only where the image slices for the rollover buttons should be. The rest of the Viewer is intact. Before converting to .mht, the html file works fine. After conversion, the .mht file continues to work fine, but only on my machine. On any other, regardless of Windows OS, the gaps (red crosses) appear where the buttons should be. These 'gaps' trigger the javascript but fail to deliver the viewer images (more red crosses).
