Go into "Control Panel/administrative tools/services" and right click on "messenger" and then under properties, choose "Disable"

There is a short download called Shoot the Messenger found on the Gibson Research site. If the Gibson site doesn't come up, just type in Shoot the Messenger in your search engine. It takes one second to download and puts an icon on your desktop and you can enable or disable it. This really works for me -- the other method didn't.

Hi, Teddy.

Go to Start > Run and paste this command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Click OK and Windows Messenger will be removed from your system,

Hope this helps.

Teddy's talking about the Messenger Service, not Windows Messenger. Any of the first three responses will do the trick for ya Teddy.

I would also put on some firewall software. If the messenger service is open to the outside world, who knows what other services are open and available that shouldnt be.
