OS: Win 98
CPU/Ram: 64Mb
Comment:

I have a MS6168 Ver 2 Motherboard with a PIII 500 Processor. It origonally had 64Mb of SDRAM, which I removed and replaced with 2 x 128Mb PC133 SDRAM. When booting the BIOS only regesters as 128Mb of RAM. I have tried swapping them around and only having one installed and each time it regesters as 128Mb. I even tried 1 x 128Mb and 1 x 64Mb together and it still came up with 128Mb.
Please Help.

Maybe u have bought high density RAM - some older mobos just don't like it.

Take the RAM back and get low density.

Get decent quality RAM like Crucial or Kingston btw (some cheap unbranded RAM are 'seconds' and can cause no end of problems)

Hope this helps

how many slots do you have? did you try putting
the chips in different slots? maybe you
need to modify some settings in your bios,
did you check that?

In that case, have a close inspection of the metal fingers in the RAM slot - maybe one is bent, missing or corroded.

Try swapping the 128 & 64 around - if only the first slot seems to work (u get either 128 or 64), then the slot looks to be the culprit !!

well the BIOS reports that both slots have RAM installed, will try swapping the 64mb and 128mb around but I dont think its that.

this is a long-shot, and only pertains
to superman's problem, but I remember
reading a long time ago that you can
only have ram chips in pairs. i.e.
you can't have 3-chips, only 2, 4,6,
etc. this was 6-9yrs, so maybe things
have changed... at any rate... see if
if when you install both 128mb sdrams
it recognizes ~256mb.

First make sure your mobo supports more than 128mb ram, since it detects 128mb in the BIOS then it ain't windows..try updating your bios but make sure the mobo again supports more than 128mb ram also you can try pc100's instead.Good Luck

yeah the mobo supports a maximum of 256mb of RAM, thought about flashing the mobo but on these older ones it is sometimes a bit unpredictable.
