My motherboard will not register more than 128MB RAM in each of the two DIMM slots. I have tried switching the sticks, I have tried PC100 and PC133.
Here's what I know.
Motherboard: ECS P6IWP-FE
CPU: PIII 700MHz | 3.3V | clock rate internal 700 / external 100 / supports 800
OS: Windows XP PRO
BIOS is current.
MEM: This is directly from the manual of the MOBO - For this mainboard, you must use 168-pin 3.3v Non-buffered Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMS). The memory chips must be standard or registered SDRAM. The memory bus can run at 66MHz or 100MHz/133MHz If your CPU operates over a 100/133 system bus, you must install PC-100 or PC133 memory that also operates over a 100/133 bus. There are two slots for modules. You must install at least one module, it makes no difference which slot you use to install the module. Each module can be installed with from 8MB to 256MB of memory, so total capacity is 512MB. The MOBO supports chips that have EC or ECC.What I have tried:
1. One 256MB Stick; PC100 and PC133; in DIMM 1 and DIMM 2. This results in only 128MB in the bios and Windows XP.
2. One 256MB Stick and one 128MB Stick; in DIMM 1 and DIMM 2; then reversed. Both combinates result in 256MB in the bios and 256 in Win XP.
3. Two 256MB sticks one in DIMM 1 and the other in DIMM 2. This results in 256MB in bios and 256 in Win XP.One last thing. When I ran Dr Hardware with 256MB in DIMM 1 and 128MB in DIMM 2: These were the results from SMBIOS: supported types = StandardEDO. Voltages = 5V. access times(ns) = 70ns:yes / 60ns:yes / 50ns:no. max module size(MB) = 512. Error detection = 8-bit parity. Both Bank 0 and 1: Memory type = DIMM SDRAM | installed(MB) = 128MB Single-Bank | activated(MB) = 128MB Single-Bank | corr. errors = no | non-corr. errors = no.
Please, Please tell me why I cant get the board or win xp to see more than 128MB on each DIMM slot?????

Sounds like the 256mb stick is no good or was mismarked when you bought it. Either try the stick in a different computer or buy/exchange another stick and see if that helps. Since the computer sees the memory I would guess it is mismarked but you never know.
It also worries me that Dr.Hardware says your board supports EDO ram. EDO runs at 5v and obviously isn't compatiable with newer 3.3v sticks... Your motherboard should however support SDRAM as the manual says.

Are the 2 separate 256Mb Modules [1 x PC100 and 1 x PC133] made up with Chips on both sides?
Your board may only recognise those with a higher density 'solution': thus if you check your 128Mb Module, it might have only 8 chips and the 256Mb Module has 16 chips [effectively 2 x 128Mb Modules 'piggy backed'].
If this is the case you have an answer, if not take your system to your memory supplier and get them to read the 'chips' on the 128Mb Module and find a 256Mb Module with the same specification.
Here are 4 different 256Mb Modules from one supplier, notice the difference in specification! Now match one of these with your 128Mb Module.
1. 256MB SDRAM, PC100 SDRAM, PC100 CL=2 Unbuffered Non-parity 8ns 3.3V 32Meg x 64
2. 256MB SDRAM, PC100 SDRAM, PC100 CL=2 Non-parity 8ns 3.3V 32Meg x 64
3. 256MB SDRAM, PC100 SDRAM, PC100 CL=2 Unbuffered ECC 8ns 3.3V 32Meg x 72
4. 256MB SDRAM, PC100 SDRAM, PC100 CL=2 Registered ECC 8ns 3.3V 32Meg x 72

Ok, this is all the info I could find off the sticks that I have.
1. 256MB PC133: Chips on 1 side. Chips say 32mx8 SDRAM-7.5-T
2. 256MB PC100: Chips on 1 side. Chips say same. 32x8 SDRAM-7.5-T
3. 128MB PC100: Chips on both sides (8 on each). > not sure this will help < TI -8A TMS664814DGE 3A 8AA2F7 P
4. 128MB PC100: Chips on both sides, but only 4 each. (0048 - 2 of the 8 total. the other six - 0052) they all have the rest. 1-2 MT 48LC8M16A2 TG -75 B
I am not sure of the rest (Volts, CL, etc) because it seems like Dr Hardware is giving false readings. It seems like the board would read one of the 256MB correctly. I have tried each of them in each slot. Always comes up with 128MB. The 256MB's are from the same company and are new within the last 2 months.
Any more info would be appreciated.
