I had this issue pop up today for the first time. It shut down some 'application popup' and then kicked a plethora of services in the backside. Here was the error:

Application popup: svchost.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x77fcb317" referenced memory at "0x00000701". The memory could not be "written".

After svchost went down, it was followed by COM+ Event System, Network Connections Service, Removeable Storage Service, Remote Access Control Manager, System Event Notification, Internet Connection Sharing, and Telephony Service. In that order...or at least all at the exact same time.

This occured on my machine while I was playing flight sim 2002, I have no idea why it happened. My machine has been running that game, and everything else, stable for a long time. This is the only time it shows up in the event logs, and I keep a large event log too.

Anybody know why this memory error occured? And better yet, why all the services failed at once? I'm not msce, but I would imagine svchost is short for services host control ... which explains why the other services hiccuped...but I just want to make sure.

Thanks for your ideas.

Hi,
Yes, I've also had the same problem since a couple of weeks. I'm not running games but normal stuff like outlook express, Explorer, word etc. This pop-up window appears when I'm shutting down and closing all the open windows.
Also, I'm now getting a slower and slower system (which recovers if I re-bot).
Finally, here's a new one for you all to ponder on.
Since yesterday I cannot open attachments in Outlook (even if I attatch one of my own documents and send it to myself). If I open a mail I see on the top:
"OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your email".(This seems to have started since I installed the Windows Service Pack 1 - any connection?
Looking forward to your comments

OK here's the situation I've just recovered from.
NT 4.0 Print server was rebuilt over the weekend - I loaded all new drivers from the HP website. Users now not able to print "some" excel documents. Excel crashes with the error: Excel.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You need to restart the proram. An error log is being created.

I found nothing in the users event log - and dr watson logged the crash, but it provided NO helpful information.

I used the MS fix for disabling Dr Watson

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q188296

Now the error generated when trying to print to an HP 8000 printer is The instruction at "0x77fcb9ae" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program.

I've determined that there is a driver conflict between the HP 8000 PCL driver native to her w2k workstation and the hp 8000 PCL 5e for WINNT or W2K from the print server. In order to force her apps to use the native driver, I changed her connection to the server from \\servername\sharename to printing to the IP address of the printer.

By doing this I can force the workstation to use the local\native driver and to NOT use the driver from HP.

Hope this helps someone that is as frustrated as I was.
