Memory card Safely remove hardware problem

Sony / 128mb memory stick

Specs: Windows xp, p4, 3ghz, 1gb
When I remove my sony 128mb memory card from my multi card reader in my computer it seems to have a problem. I used to be able to, stop it, remove it and put it in again 10 minutes later and use it again.
Now when I stop it (doing exactly the same as I used to do), it lets me remove it safely but then won't recognise it when I re-insert it. I look on the 'safely remove hardware' button and none of the multi card reader are showing up which usually shows as 'usb mass storage device', just beneath my voyager 220v usb which is seperate from the multicard reader, this still shows up. I checked under 'my computer' and they are not there. There is usually a green button that flashes when I insert the memory card but this doesn't flash either. When I turn the computer off and on again it will then recognise it all as usual until I stop it again when the same occurs.
It seems that by stopping it I am disabling the whole multicard and I don't know how to get it to show up again without turning off the computer. Just to be clear it is an inbuilt card reader.
This is exactly what I do to stop it:
Double click on 'safely remove hardware'
Click on 'USB mass storage device', click 'stop'. This takes me to another window that asks me to confirm what device I would like to stop, it lists 'USB mass storage device', and then lists the names and then the hardrive labels beneath them, none are highlighted.
I used to just click ok with none highlighted and there was never a problem, now doing this, or selecting just one and pressing ok ( I have tried them all on different occasions), all leads to the same problem.
Please help!
