mediaplayer problem: thermal vision

sometimes when I want to view a video file in mediplayer, the video us completely screwed up. It's just abstract colours. actually, it looks like I'm watching the video with thermal vision. How do I fix this "thermal vision" problem? am I missing codecs, and if so, how do I get them?
