media player streaming problem

I'm re-posting this message as I still can't figure it out.
I'm running a new machine - Athlon 1700, geForceII, Smartlink modem with a clean install of XP. I installed Netscape6, followed by Media player 6.4 plugin (from microsoft) but streaming asf in the plugin hangs after a few seconds and the connection seems to fail - I have to manually disconnect + reconnect again.
I noticed there are others here with the same problem & found an article in the microsoft knowledge base which acknowledges this but fails to give a fix
If anyones got any ideas on this I'd be so happy!! most usefull site on the web - thankyou
