Media Player does not display video

I just purchased in slightly used PC [ThinkCentre S50 8086] with Windows XP, SP3 installed. Using Windows Media Player, whenever I try to view files of type .WMV or .AVI the file plays but with audio only.
Any suggestions how to fix.. perhaps missing plug-ins?

Just download vlc player and it will play all video types. Or update media player to the newest version from the microsoft site.

Have you tried using a different media player. VLC is generally compatible with all file types. Here's a blog post that can tell you more: Media Players
