Heres the story:

When I had my computer redone with Windows XP MCE, I decided to try out the Media Center.

During the MC setup, it said that it needed an internet connection to finish the setup. My computer didn't have an internet connection at the time, so I had no choice but to cancel the setup.

I noticed that MC icons appeared in the start menu, but I didn't bother to try running the MC. Some time later. I decided to try it. When I opened the MC, it just froze and I got the following error message:

"ehshell.exe-Common language runtime debugging services: Application generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0xd8c (3468), Thread id=0xel8 (3608). Press ok to terminate the application, press cancel to debug the application."

If I pressed cancel to debug, I got a box that said "No debuger found". (I won't bother typing what it said after that, unless someone here asks me to.

Just recently, I found out that I had disabled a program called ehtray.exe to free up memory. I enabled it again, and now MC will launch. I can listen to music and look at pictures, but when I try to watch videos, the whole computer freezes up solid until I press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, I then get the messege "Component registration failure-some of the files needed to play radio or video are missing or corrupt. Media Center component registration may have failed." I then have to terminate MC using the task manager. I am assuming this is because I quit the MC setup before it finished due to the lack of internet connection. Can anyone help me? If anything requires reinstalling MC, I am S.O.L because I don't have the Windows XP MCE CD. Perhaps I can tell Microsoft about the problem and they will, send me a copy of MC? Thank you for any replies!

-Trent

If your computer is custom built why don't you have the Windows MCE CD?

I bought the computer from a guy who builds computers. My uncle owns a Windows XP MCE CD. When the computer (Originally Windows XP Prof.) started acting really slow, he reinstalled it with XP MCE.

Then you used the same WMCE CD your uncle used? If so, it's against M$ EULA policy of one copy per machine only.

I ain't going back to XP Pro! I love the color scheme of MCE and the extra programs that come with. Besides, I already have all of my games and programs installed and my computer is running great. I don't want it redone again. Also, my uncle doesn't have an XP Pro CD, and I'm not gonna go back to the guy I bought the machine from and pay $80 for him to redo it with XP pro. In fact, i'm not going to that guy ever again. He overcharges everybody, and other people have told me that he uses an illigal copy of Windows.

Did you Google either one of the errors?

There are lots of hits for both of those errors.

Hey XpUser!

I think what he means when he says he uses the same XP CD "For all the computers he fixes" means he uses the same XP CD to access the recovery console in machines he repairs, as do I. At least I hope that's what he means :)

Jennifer SUMN-I never even thought of that, I guess I should try that

Musky-Perhaps, I have never seen what he does. I know he had to do a complete install on mine because he wiped my HDD clean.

XpUser- 1. How would Microsoft find out?
2. Why don't you just focus on the question I stated at the top, and let my uncle deal with that issue. He's been doing this for years, and has used the same copy of Windows over and over on dozens of computers. And it isn't just Windows XP, either.

I couldn't find anything on google. I'm ready to email Microsoft on the problem. (You can email technical support, can't you?)

In case this could help, it's MC 2005 with rollup 2 update installed.

You are most likely running an illegal installation and you are going to call MSoft?

Trent: Hello Microsoft? I'm having a problem with my PC.

M$: Which OS are you running?

Trent: XP Media Center, the same one my uncle has installed on dozens of computers.

M$: Please hold while I transfer your call...

M$: Hello, M$ Anti-Piracy Division, what's your uncle's name & address?

Trent: uhhhhh....

M$: That's OK, we have caller ID, if you don't tell us, we'll just have to nail you instead!

Yeah, i'm gonna tell MS that my uncle has used his copy of Windows on multiple computers. My uncle knows what he's doing! Besides, when I said "dozens of computers", I meant with Windows in general. He has only used his XP MCE CD twice. His media center station and my PC. In both instances, Windows installed and activated with no problems. I have a registration code in the registered to: part of system properties. It's not illegal-he bought it brand new from MS. For God's sake, just help me out! I want to use the Media Center, not get told a hundred times how illegal my uncle's copy of Windows is!

It means your Windows installation is pirated & calling M$ to ask about problems with it is moronic.

Go ahead and call M$. The person most likely to handle your call is HERE. Don't underestimate the power Cori Hartje possessed to go after your uncle and you as accessory wherever you are anywhere in the world, even in Russia's remote Siberia region.
