Thinking about upgrading to XP home edition.I'm currently am running ME.In order to do this ,do I have to reformat or clear my entire C drive or does it install over Windows ME???

You can upgrade. But run the system tests first. It will tell you what devices will need XP drivers. Also what software has to be uninstalled before you upgrade then installed back on later.

In general you can perform an upgrade instal but a lot of people would recommend backing up anything you need to keep then doing a format and clean instal of XP. This will ensure that you will not bring forward any problems from ME to XP. It is easy to do a clean instal even using an "Upgrade" disk. It will ask for proof of ownership of qualifying operating system during the setup process. At that point insert your ME disk. Re-insert the XP disk once the verification has been accepted.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach him to fish and his wife will never forgive you.

You would be wiser to go a clean-install route; even a dual-boot - providing you have a separate partition for XP... If this is a single partitioned drive then you can use Partition Magic (version 8x or later) or System Commander to establish one for XP. Then go for a dual-boot. Backup data first!
The Upgrade CD allows a clean-install if a compliant/qualifying OS is already present, or a CD for one is to hand.

Just upgraded three computers from ME to XP. One was a clean install and the other two were upgrades. All went flawlessly.
I had backups and all machines were maintained. It would have been a hastle if I would have had to load all my programs.
Backup whats important, then upgrade to ME, any problems you can clean install and use your backup.
Upgrade takes an hour, new install and reinstall programs one or two days!
