What format are the original and what format are you saving them in?
If you save them in JPEG the size will drop as JPEG compressess the file. It is a lossy compression which means that it extracts information from the file to achieve its high compression rates. JPEG should only be used for the final product that will not be edited again. Every time a JPEG is saved, it is compresses a little bit more, taking a little bit more information from the file.

Sounds to me like you want to leave them uncompressed. I don't use MS Photo Editor, but you can probably choose to save it as a MS Editor file, or as uncompressed in some way, and it will leave it as the 'original' image - no compression whatsoever.
