Hi everyone....is anyone else encountering any difficulties with their McAfee Virus Scan? Just curious as I can't seem to obtain updates, nor contact their online support.

While trying to update...."unable to contact server".
While trying to connect to their online support...."page cannot be displayed".

Quite baffling as I've made absolutely no changes here at all; this cropped up on its' own. I checked my Security Center and my virus scan is indeed working; just cannot update nor contact them...
Anyone else notice this too???

Many thanks; enjoy the weekend!

Hi Tommyo -

I no longer use McAfee products (long story).
I went over there and have browsed around their sites with no problem.

Hi XpUser and Bob. I can't figure it out; I can't get to the address that Bob listed there neither. The page hangs, then I get the notorious "page cannot be displayed"..

I checked my SP-2 "Security Center", and it shows that my Mcafee is detected and working, and all appears o.k. there.

I'll try McAfee's tech support again and see if I can get through to them. I'm just wondering if I'm the only person experiencing this or if there are others too.

Thanks for the replies; if I straighten this out I'll post back here and let you know. I hate to switch a.v. around as I just paid for the renewel a few months ago.
Well time to troubleshoot.....thanks and enjoy your weekend!

Just visited the McAfee site. I didn't have any problems, although I had to navigate past a full page advertising McAfee products before I could get in. The link below should take you directly to McAfee's support page.

Good luck, Solarian

PS Came back a second time from the McAfee site a few minutes ago. I take care of a friend's PC and he wanted McAfee to disable the automatic renewal for VirusScan Online billed to his credit card.

That requires a live chat with McAfee Tech Support. I had no problems getting through.

Thinking back, Tommyo, I had a similar problem to yours a few years ago. I never learned what caused the problem because a different PC issue forced me to reinstall the operating system. When I did that, the McAfee website problem cleared up as well.

Hope you can track down the problem; I know it's frustrating.

Hi Solarian; good to hear from you! I still have the difficulties here; I tried that link but it took me to a McAfee corporate edition troubleshooting page. The mystery continues......

At least I've got protection as my SP-2 Security Center advises that anti virus is detected and working. It seems to be some problem with reaching McAfee sites.
That's why I was wondering if there were others having similar problems too.
I can't reach their tech support neither, LOL!!! So I'm stuck here....

I've done no changes whatsoever here; this started yesterday by itself. I even temporarily shut off Zone Alarm, but to no avail... And this was an online purchase, and not a "boxed" one where I can try to re-install it. I can't reach McAfee at all, so I cannot try a re-install..

Oh man; why me ??? Well, take care Solarian and thanks for your reply. I'll continue to ty and decipher this mess out..
Enjoy your weekend, my friend... starting to get quite cold here in Massachusetts.

Hi Abnormal...I haven't yet tried other a.v. sites. I was just on a McAfee forum, and somebody asked me to open my "hosts" file, but I cannot find the damned thing here.... my search assistant pulls up a couple of them, and I view them with notepad, but can't make heads or tails out of it.
Way over my head here, I guess.....

c:\windows\system\drives\etc and open the file Hosts, with notepad, and see what you have after "127.0.0.1 localhost

This is what somebody is asking me; where do I find this location?? I don't know how to get to this location; that is my problem....

tommy o, Your hosts file (no extension) should be located in your C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder. Open it with notepad and let us know if there's anything below 127.0.0.1 localhost.

Yours maybe located in C:\WINNT\System 32\drivers\etc

Just use Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) to find it.

127.0.0.1 localhost

Good morning all.... I slept on this problem overnight; sorry I did not reply to you sooner but I needed to get up early today.

I recieved a e-mail from my friend who helped me to locate the host file; I pasted what I found. Does that appear normal to you?
I hate to admit it, but the host files are something I'm not too familiar with, so I hope what I posted here is o.k.

I just tried to update my McAfee again this morning; same problem... "McAfee not able to connect". But upon boot-up this morning, I do get the McAfee splash screen that reports that my Virus Scan is protecting. The Security Center in SP-2 also reports that anti-virus is detected and working.

So it appears that I cannot get McAfee to call home for updates. I updated with the latest update fine three days ago; so this just started. And I have done no changes whatsoever on my pc, so this has me baffled.
I cannot connect to McAfee tech support neither, as it hands and I get the "page cannot be displayed".

If I had a boxed purchase here, I'd maybe try deleting everything and re-installing, but this was an on-line renewal after my trial ran out.

So, I am baffled here..... I'm out of ideas, so if anyone can offer anything, I'm certainly all ears. Thanks very much!!

Tommyo, I am experiencing the same issue you are. I noticed it yesterday also. I have two completely independent computers that have this problem and since I don't believe in coincidence and all other sites and programs appear to be operating normally, so far, it appears to be something amiss at McAfee or communication with their program. I have used the IE security program for quite a while and up to this point I like it a lot. If you find some setting or OS issue that fixes this issue, let us know. Thanks

Wow; I'm not alone!!! Thanks so much, DJD for telling me that. At least I know I'm not alone here!!

I hope McAfee fixes this damn thing out soon, as I'm starting to "talk to myself"....not a good sign, LOL!

Hello Tufenuf; nice to hear from you. Haven't chatted with you for some time! Thanks for looking at the host file. I'm glad that appears o.k. with that area.

I've been tinkering around hereand trying some different cookie settings, just in case...still no luck. Still some reason why we cannot connect to the server. I even disabled the SP-2 pop-up blocker, just in case, but still no luck.
I also tried allowing all cookies... no dice neither. I have not touched any of the "script debugging" check boxes, as I don't fully understand what they do and I would hate to muck up my pc as it is running superb here.

Thanks all for your help and responses; I'll post again if I learn anything new here from the McAfee forums.

I have the same problem. I do not believe it is a virus or anything wrong with my computer. I cannot connect to mcafee.com using any computer on my home network. This includes computers running Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Home, Windows 98, and Linux. Maybe McAfee has blocked HTTP requests from my gateway router's IP address. But actually, it is worse than that. I can't even ping mcafee.com.

I'm having the same problem and was also thinking HOSTS file, but mine is OK. Seems clear that it's a hijacker. Just ran Spybot which clened up a few things, but still have the problem.

Yessss. I have determined that this problem is not related to Windows, etc. so don't start re-installing and ripping out your systems. As mentioned earlier, I cannot connect to mcafee.com using any of my Windows machines or Linux machines, so I figured the problem must be in the network routing between me and mcafee.com. I use Comcast, so I took my computer down the street to a Verizon DSL connection and it worked OK. So the problem appears to be with Comcast. Maybe someone with a better knowledge of network diagnostics can suggest some ways to isolate the problem further.

Hello all! Been experiencing the same problem but with a twist. Although I cannot connect to any Mcafee.com sites using IE or Mozilla, I CAN get to those sites using AOL's browser (go figure that one...). Interestingly, I have some experience with the hosts file for blocking web sites, and from that experience, AOL has always bypassed that file and been able to go to sites listed in hosts. Now this symptom suggests that Mcafee.com is listed in the hosts file, but IT IS NOT!! Very strange problem indeed, but I am very relieved to know that I am not the only one experiencing this. I dual boot to both XP and Windows 98se, and neither OS' will connect to Mcafee's website, nor am I able to update. (Just for the record, I connect through Comcast.) Hope this gets resolved!
