I'm almost sure I broke my computer. I was on my PC (Windows XP SP2) and I have McAfee. It told me to upgrade to a different version of SecurityCenter, so I did, and now nothing will work. I can't connect to the internet, McAfee says my protection is off and when I try to turn it on it just says "one or more things need your attention" or something like that. Does anyone know what's going on? My Mom's gonna kill me if I broke it...

Whoops, also thought I should include that I cannot uninstall it. It says I have to uninstall 'legacy' programs first, so I tried uninstalling McAfee Virus Scan, which worked, then I tried uninstalling McAfee Privacy Service, but it wouldn't uninstall, saying I needed to be logged on as Administrator. The only user on my computer is Admin.

admin is NOT administrator.

terminate all mcafee related processes.

stop/disable ALL mcafee related services.

uninstall all other mcafee products first, then uninstall mcafee security center .

I did what you said, but I can't uninstall Security Center. It just sits there forever, making no progress.

go to the McAfee site and make sure you have the proper uninstallation for the version you are using. You have to remove ALL of it in order to get things to work properly...Norton & McAfee are famous for imbedded files.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Uh, my brother decided to reinstall Windows without telling me, so I guess this won't be a problem anymore, hehe. Thanks, though, guys.

"Norton & McAfee are famous for imbedded files"

I've been running McAfee Virus Scan for three years now; never a problem....I'll renew it again when my renewel time comes up.
I did recieve a pop-up today about a McAfee "upgrade" being available(not "update"). I didn't choose to get it, but I wonder if that was what gave you the problems .....
Personally, I'm happy with McAfee Virus Scan, and I'm not going to mess with any McAfee "upgrade"... I believe that pop-up mentioned an upgrade to "security center"; so I had thought that would entail the combo virus scan and firewall; which I didn't want. I like my trusty Zone Alarm for my firewall.

that's bad...they leave junk behind so other programs won't function when you try uninstalling them.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Yup, they sure do... I remember seeing an un-installer for McAfee somewhere; but I'm not sure where I saw it. It supposedly gets rid of all (or most) traces of it from the registry.
