good day everyone!!!

Anyone here knows what is the maximum memory allowed for Windows XP Home Edition? A friend of mine upgraded his laptop (sony VAIO but cant remember the actual model) memory to 2 GB. Now, after booting up and logging on to Windows, he checked the reported RAM..It only shows 1.5GB where it should be 2GB. But the BIOS sees 2GB.

Is it the limitation of Windows XP Home?? I encoutered this before and both laptops where equipt with XP Home.

can you guys provide a link if any?? I already tried to find some but came out empty.

thanks in advance

32Bit OSes (without PAE): 3.5GB

64Bit OSes: A lot of RAM (I think 128GB).

Definitely an OS issue, but I Don't know why.

Your friend either bought the wrong memory or the computer can't accept 2GB of RAM. Most likely the RAM is incompatable with the computer.

WinXP home can use up to 4GB of RAM but will only show about 3.5GB. This is due to the 32bit architecture.

OtheHill did indeed explain it more clearly. It probably is an issue of the computer running into its maximum.

I recently put in a 512MB stick of RAM into a computer, and it only showed as 128MB. Putting in a 32MB stick showed as 32MB. The maximum for that computer was probably 384MB of RAM, 128 in each slot.

How old is the computer?

I POAST THRAD!!!!!!!!111!1!1!!

My understanding of the issue is that memory is being taken away by system devices. For example video cards, even though they have their own bios's, are loading software to enhance operations in system memory [ram].

Hardware is taking the ram.

Are you ready for where Microsoft wants you to go today?

What you explained happens at the 4GB level, not 2GB. Has to be incompatible RAM or the machine won't take 2GBs.

I am thinking what wanderer is thinking. It has to be an OS problem because the BIOS reports 2GB of RAM, which is what the laptop was upgraded to.

Hello spamgaurd006
first off how old is the computer.
I recall having that problem.
Anyway to get to the point you may need low density chips for the ram as certian year made mainboard will not accept high denisty chip.(Ram)
Hope this will clear it up.
ask the seller for low density ram for the model or make of the computer.
Hope this help.
PS do check what is the maximum amount of ram will the mainboard will handel.
unless their is a work around to update the bios only if they have resolve the limitation of of Ram example 1 gig was max or not

Have a Great Day ;-D

Thanks for the reply guys!! The laptop was I guess 1 to 2 years old. On the manual, it says it can handle up to 2GB up ram. It might be a compatiblity issue on the exsisting ram. But Im still wondering why does the BIOS read it correctly (2GB) and the XP home does not????

Im still confuse guys hehehe but thanks for the inputs and more power to all!!!

It's more than likely the video card stealing system memory. Download Aida32 or some other PC info tool to see how much memory your integrated graphics is using.
