New computer. OS is installed (XP Pro). Install severel programs, 10-12, then want to save something like image of hdd, but not full image because OS (licence key) is installed.
How?
Want to put a CD or DVD with "image" or "backup" in new (virgin) computer and make copy of bounch of programs which want to be installed on computers.

As far as I know, you can't transfer a program from one computer and install it on another. The program needs to make some registry entries to function. You need to install the programs on each individual computer. You could copy all the installation files to a disk. Just download the programs you want to install and copy the installation (exe) files to the disk.

Applications are basically in two forms.

One is with an installer that registers with registry. The other does not need to or makes a temp faux registry (such as some portable apps)

To save a program or set of programs you'd need to know all file locations (some older ones are tied to the position in disk and almost can't be moved) along with registry.

Your only easy choice is to make ntbackup (with system state if you want to move XP Key) and apply it to a clean install on the new system.

Don't waste your time.

Not only would you be violating the license agreements of the software installed but apps aren't made to be moved that way.


hint: this is why they are designed the way they are
