Many .exes do not work.

Specs: Windows XP
Just this morning, I had been running a game,
I had minimized it to the desktop and started
to run an avi file to watch in the meantime
while it loads. A bit into the movie I forget
about the game and a couple of minutes into
the movie my computer halts completely, like
the movie had become a broken record player
and repeated the image and sound every .5
seconds repeatedly. I reboot the computer to
escape it, and after boot up, more than half of
my .exe programs have stopped working

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! I've tried what you had told me to
do, and it came to no avail, Windows Messenger had logged me
in, but when my contacts list was loading, MSN stops
responding, and I still cannot get past anything past My Computer. s:

If your system having antivirus software, might have corrupted your exes.

Is there a way I can repair these? Because it's also effecting
explorer.exe. :/

I have avast free and Norton AntiVirus.
