The problem is that your burned copy of XP has a file in the \i386\asms\6000\msft\windows\common\controls\ directory called CONTROLS.MSN.

This file is corrupt. You can try to open it and it will give you an error. For some reason, copying the XP CD seems to cause this problem with Nero or Adaptec. It seems to do that at random, as i have tried to make a backup copy and two of them failed but the third one worked.

I have no idea why it does this, but if someone has a fix, im all ears.

You can copy the entire I386 directory to your HD and get a good copy of that file, and replace the damaged one on your HD, then just run \I386\winnt.exe to install

I had an WindowsME and Windows2000 dual boot system. I tried to upgrade the Windows2000 partition. I had the same asms problem but I could not download the file from the above ftp site. Does anyone have an alternative link? WinMe still works, but windows2000 boot option changed to winXP (just tries to continue setup). Is there a way to cancel the winXP setup and return to windows2000 state?

Use Norton Ghost to burn an image of the CD. It will probably work as opposed to burning it with Adaptec or Nero.

do you guys not read the script above before you post?? come on. all right, enough ranting...

found a similar string at
http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/005629.html

it was much more help. from what I gather, the problem is caused by a bad burn. you need to find the ORIGINAL SOURCE of your copy of XP. by that, I mean, the ISO, BIN, NRG file, etc... then burn that DIRECTLY to a new CD. or, use ISOBuster (freeware) and extract the file, and burn what you extracted to a CD. this is not rocket science. Also, there are craploads of ftp's out there, but they are so unreliable. I got XP off Morpheus. It took 3 days to download, but I got it. a little patience goes a long way.

By the way, if you reformatted your computer completely without a backup plan before installing pirated software, then you completely deserve this, and are not really worth the intelligence of the helpful posters in this string.

Thank you. happy computing.

Hey "little help" dude, Go easy MAN!

I'm a working NT/Win2K MCSE and have 10 years of experience with 1000's of installs, and this one stumped me for a day. But I found help by searching on several newsgroups. I validated this fix by crossferencing different sources. And besides I didn't need to spend three days downloading an obviously suspicious iso code. ;)

If there are any newbies that are still having trouble... I'll check back later and email you the fix if necessary.

Good Luck,

LG

Now, what gets me, is with a corrupt CONTROLS.MAN file, the CD will still work on some machines, but not on others. Apparently some hardware configs don't use that file. Crazy!

Use Easy CD Creator 5 instead of Nero to burn the iso-image.
I downloaded the iso twice and get the same errors. so i checked the iso-content with winimage and found the controls.man in the image was ok on both versions.
Then i tried to burn it with Easy CD Creator 5 and it works on the first shot!

say you copy the contents of the xp cd to the hard drive then replace the CONTROLS.MAN file. Will the cd be bootable when you try to install XP on hard drive with a clean slate?
