Hello everybody,
For certain performance reasons I HAVE to move back to from IE7 to IE.
I am actually mostly using Firefox, but yet, whenever I use IE6 I want it to be at least as 50% safe as IE7. Especially I want to find a way to block drive-by installs when

navigating infected websites.
Is there a way to configure IE6 in such way that nothing gets installed from browser, or no script will automatically run and install till I give IE6 permission to do that?
Is it possible at all to make IE6 safe?
Any info or links for good articles are deeply appreciated.
Regards.

While in IE6 go to tools then internet options. Click on security then custom level. Change anything you want on the list to make it as safe as you would like.

What he said. Just go into the internet zone and put everything up to high or disabled. Any sites you ultimately need to trust can be added to the trusted zone, but their ads and crap won't be able to run. Its excellent and a very secure way to browse.

Don't forget custom host files.

At least Windows is giving you variety and entertainment! Just click the icon and BOOM! Another blue screen pops up.

...Moving right along. Host files are files that the system reads (can be anything, I use a massive host file on Windows and my Mac) before retreiving a web page, in simple terms. If the webpage you are trying to retreive has been redirected to the localhost, thats 127.0.0.1, in the hosts file, it won't load it. The custom hosts files that are out there are commonly put in place to block those pesky ad sites. Now, with a host file in place thats almost 2MB in size... I never see ads on any sites. Instead you get the browser's 'I can't do this' message, whatever that may be, in its place. This saves a lot of your bandwidth, and in the case of myspace and other places that have virus infected ads, can often prevent calamity.

The particular host file I am using is somewhat brought together from various places. If you want I can send you it and give you instructions where to put it and the like, on your system.

As for IE7, I do not particularly like it and refuse to use it on my laptop with XP. But on my Mac I use it mainly because it's one more browser that I can test my website on. It's not the pinnacle of Microsoft's browser line I can tell you... IE 5.5 and 6 are faster but less secure. that's it.

if you click my name (celsius) it should show you my e-mail address and an e-mail form. Just e-mail me and put something meaningful in the subject line and I'll pass the file and info on.

I'm having the mother of all problems with a virtualisation product right now though [attention Mac Users: never use Parallels - its a piece of junk] so my response may be somewhat delayed. Bear with me. :)
