How do I make certain web sites take up the whole width of my laptop screen (which I run at the native 1600 x 1200) without changing the res from native as this makes the screen somewhat fuzzy.
e.g.
http://www.cnn.com/

thats a bit of an open question. Do u mean yr website or the windows its in.
For the site it will use the whole width available to the windows its in, if not use a single table with one cell and make it 100%
For the window to be 100% use a script to open a new window from your index page to open the site in a new maximised window.
There are plenty of sites on the net for the HTML for doing all this, maybe search for HTML/DHTML/Javascript etc.

humm... may have miss read your q.
If yr trying to get www.cnn.com to fill your window then u cant as its how thew site is made to use 800x600 for best results. This, only www.cnn.com have control of.

Jen,
If you're still not satisfied, check out this IE plugin (not a freeware)
WebEyes - Easiest way to read the Web
partial quote:
This Internet Explorer software puts YOU in control of reading the Web. Web Eyes allows you to easily adjust the type on any Web page to the size of your choice (up to 144 pt) and eliminates scrolling.
You Control Type Size on any Website
No more straining while reading the web. Web Eyes easily adjusts type size as large or small as you like (4-144pt). Web Eyes doesn’t just magnify the type…the patented "reflow" technology draws each letter new. So, no matter what size works best for you, the type is always sharp and crisp.i_XpUser

If its the text you cant read you could save your money and make the Test Size bigger by going to 'View' -> 'Text Size' -> 'Largest'
Just an option.
Tom
