Ok I'm a network admin and at work we have a Cisco VPN router. I can and always could connect to my work with Windows 2000 pro the Microsoft VPN client over PPTP. I upgraded to Windows XP Pro and now I can't get in. So I figured the upgrade was not the best way to go so I did a clean in stall but still no VPN. I have looked every where for answers. Tells me the “Host name and / or IP is unreachable”.

Hi

Are you able to connect to the VPN server ? There is a possibility that if you are running a firewall ( other than the XP firewall ) on the client side that it may not be setup to allow traffic on port 1723. Do you have port 1723 open for TCP on both ends? Also make sure that the XP firewall is not enabled for the VPN connection.

Good Luck

Dale

Ok I still can't make a VPN connection with WIN XP. I can with WIN 95,98,NT and 2k. From within the building or from outside of it at home. The VPN router is working fine. Also the VPN router is outside the firewall so there's no way it could be that. I do not have XP firewall turned on. I can ping the VPN host or IP from home.

OK, I can connect. I think the biggest thing is to upgrade any firmware with the routers. Now, once I connect, I cant browse the network. If I pull out the router on the client side, it works fine. Does anyone have any ideas. Opening ports, names of networks, anything????? BTW, thanx for the port #'s Dale. Why would the client side have to have port 1723 open?? Kinda strange, but ill try it.
2 xp networks
2 Linksys routers

Ok you’re on a network running XP with 2 Linksys routers. Well I have a Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router at home with firmware 1.40.2 and can make VPN connection without opening, forwarding or DMZing any of my PC’s out. I can that is but not for Win XP. This is what I would do. I’m on cable at home and I can have as meny MAC address’s provisioned as I wish. But only ONE computer can get out on the Internet at a time like this. So I provision the router and my main PC on the network. This way if I’m having trouble and not shore if it’s the router or something else, I just plug the modem into my main PC to see if it can access the Internet. I tried this with XP to see if I could VPN but still no. I can’t even make a VPN connection running XP within the building now that sad I know there’s some XP firewall setting that I have not found yet.

As far as I can see the only firewalls are when you right click on the connections in my network places, go to properties, and go to advanced. I havent seen any others and I even managed to connect properly with the microsoft fire wall up!

Hi Peoples,

Got a quick question for you all. I have got a client which I have set up VPN access for to their NT server.

Some of the employees have already been set up and are working fine. They are using win98. They can connect and access everything successfully. I have also set it up so that their login script runs when they connect via VPN.

I have tested it using win2000 which also works fine.

I have now set it up on winxp and it seems to work, however I can not get their login script to run with xp. I can't get any login script to run with xp.

Any help would be appreciated.

They are using an Alloy DSL router which also connects to their alloy switch and finally to the server.

Did you get your VPN connection to work. I am trying to establish connection w/Win XP Pro computer to another Win XP Pro computer and I keep get error 800: host unreachable, but I can ping it. If I change type of VPN from Automatic to PPTP, I get error 678: remote did not respond.

The firewall is not set up on the remote that I am trying to call. Is it possible that the ISP is causing the problem?

I am not a administrator, just a small company trying to get a network up using internet.
