Use a smaller font.

But seriously, There are two ways to create a scanned document, one is to just scan it and create a picture of the document. This can become rather large. The other way is to scan it using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and turn it into text. This will make the file much smaller.

It depends on what format you've scanned it in. If you've scanned it as a picture then you can open it in an editing program - even Paint will do - then resize it to make it smaller.

scan at a lower resolution will also reduce the byte count
