I am downgrading a computer (my daughter gave me) from Vista to XP. Once I install the OS (I bought a copy of XP) and the drivers, I'd like to install some programs. How can I make an exact copy of the hard drive to keep for future use (in case I get a virus, etc)?

You need drive-imaging/cloning software. Free ones with tutorials are here:

Before downgrading to XP you must check that the PC manufacturer has got XP drivers for that model, ideally you should have done that already, before buying XP.

Why is that important? Because Windows XP does not have a very large driver library and you can only get only get compatible ones from the PC manufacturer if it's a factory-built model.
