Comment:

My Laptop keeps freezing up at different times. Sometimes while trouble shooting, it will shut down 6 times in a row with no problem. Then it freezes again.
I've checked for spyware and did up-dated AV scans and all criticals.

I tried smart shutdown LX, still the same routine. I installed the microsoft fixes for faster booting and shut downs.
I also did a hijackthis log and all was good.
Does anyone have a solution on this? I really don't want to reformat. The Laptop has recovery discs and I'm not sure if I can do an XP repair without reformatting.
I've done a disc scan as well as defragged.

I would appreciate some help on this....thanks and Happy New Year!

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

it sounds like maybe a peice of software ou have installed did this. unfortuneatly the only way to fix this is either someone helps you at ur house or you have to back up your data and bite the bullet to reload it. i dont know if you can do an os recovery, but to be honest i never had any luck with that sort of thing, stuff would be a total mess. the best thing to do imo is back up your data, and reload. itll make everything fresh and then you can keep a close eye on when and if it does that again. hope this helps, but keep checkin back to see if anyone else replies before reloading, and ill warn ya again back up your data.

Thanks for the quick reply spiritwalker. I'm hoping not to reformat, so like you said, I will be ready to back things up if I have to. Maybe I'll get a few more replies...thanks again.

check the event log when it locks up after restarting and it should tell you what program had the problem

check the even log after clearing it though, that will make things easier to narrow down. just a recomendation though, i didnt mean to undermine you in anyway dirty_sanchez.

Thanks guys,
I did check the event log after the freezing, I cleared it and then checked it after the PC froze but it didn't give me any conflicts or ! marks, unless I read it wrong.
Thanks

it sounds like its overheating, take a vacuum and suck out the vents, or open it up and blow it out with a can of air
