Try a System Restore. If that doesn't work, do a repair install.

Hi
I had a very similar problem about 2 months ago. It happened right after I down loaded a Microsoft update. I was unable to restore or get anywhere with safemode.
Finally, I restored from a backup of about 3 months prior and I also saved all current files.
Learned my lesson: backup more frequently and especially right before I download from Microsoft!
