My computer is going very very slow. It has never gone this slow before. I need someone to give me an idea what the problem is instead of giving boosters. I dont need to boost the speed it was going fast one day then all of a sudden it was going the slowest it has ever gone. There is a major problem and i need to repair the problem not try and boost my speed with some boosting tips.

If anyone can help solve my problem please post a message of what to do.

So far i have scanned for spyware and viruses. I have defraged, and tried to restore it to a point where it was running fast. None of them helped. I have gone to the task manager to see what is taking all the cpu and none of the programs are. I did disk clean up and none of the above steps did anything to help my pc to pick up to its normal or average speed.

If anyone has any ideas to fix problem or even just tell what you think the problem is please let me know!

Thanks:
Ryan

0) Did you check the forums?!?

1) Scans and defrags *should* have helped....

2) A clean reinstall (that is, not simply an install on top of your existing installation) *usually* help.

3) Installing lots of software, antivirus, usually slows performance :-(

4) Laptops on battery power run slow due to default power conserving schemes.

5) Maybe your hard drive is dying? This is *very* speculative though.

Ryan,
A lot of things can contribute to making a once fast machine slow. First, and I mean FIRST, run and updated scan of your virus software. Worms and virus can eat away your HD before you know it. If all is good delete ALL temp. internet files and cookies. The easiest way is to got to start, programs, accesories, system tools, and select disk cleanup. After that, click start, run, and type " msconfig". Click on startup and DEselect all the programs you don't need to have enabled to start when you boot windows. These startup items take all your system resources and make your computer run at "snail" speed. If your not sure what a program is, look in up in "search" and make your decision after that. Lastly, go ahead and defragment your hard drive. Plan on starting this before you go to bed and let it run all night cause it takes hours. If none of this helps, check how much disk space you have left. You might be on the verge of an overfill!! Hope this helps.

Dear Ryan,

If you have a lot of .doc, .xls, etc. files on your hard disk, then " INDEXING SERVICE" may be the culprit of your OS going slow recently.

Please try to stop indexing service and reboot.

Please also clean out inside of \Windows\Prefetch directory and reboot.

I hope the above will give you back the speed you had before.

Sincerely yours,

I've heard that having too many fonts installed can slow your system down. If you have added extra fonts (some graphics packages add loads without asking you if you want them).

If you have loads of fonts installed, move them to a seperate folder (or save them to CD or somewhere) Reboot and see if it makes a difference

I have already tried all of the above exept for reinstalling xp. But my hard drive might be dying. I defraged my hard drive with a defraging program then i went to pcpitstops.com and ran a scan and said that my hard drive's health is poor and i need to defrage so i tried to defrag again and after i did it still said the the health of my hard drive is poor and i need to defrag. Is this a sign of my hard drive dying?

Thanks for the help and any more ideas would be appreciated.
