btw i check the enventviewer (administrative tools - event viewer)
i check for problems and fix them using help and support or microsofts learning support base :D

also i check the connection speed and see what program is using most bandwith by doing the following :

click start -> run -> type "cmd" -> type "netstat -no"
and see which has the highest PID number.
go to taskmanager, click on view and click select columns...
tick the PID box. and look on the taskmanager and u can tell which proggy uses the most bandwith...
;)

There are programs that will monitor your temperatures and warn you of problems. Motherboard Monitor is one.

Prevention goes a long way too. I rarely have to do any maintenance to my main PC, which has been on 24/7 for a couple of years. I use it mainly for a file & print server, but it's connected to my DSL anyways. My router provides a firewall, plus I run CA eTrust Antivirus, set to automatically update. I have AdAware, which I run once every couple of months, along with an occasional defrag. That's about all.

My old Win98 laptop, which I use for 90% of my work, gets a little more maintenance, but not too much. If I notice my internet slowing down, I'll empty the browser cache, delete cookies & temp files, etc, then defrag. In several years of daily surfing, I've only picked up a couple of Trojans, which my AV alerted me about, and these were easily removed. (If I stayed off of the porn sites, I probably wouldn't have gotten these either. LOL)

You can also check the mobo temp in BIOS. It's more accurate.
