The website tells me it is installed. I can see it in Add remove programs. When I go to run a file with it windows asks what program I want to use. When I select let me choose shockwave playet is not there to select.
I go to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ where it will check your flash & shockwave players & automatically offer an upgrade if one is needed.

I have the same as you Navigator 1. My opinion is that Flash is a browser Plug-in, not a program to run files.

What is the extension of the file that you are trying to play? If it's SWF, I think it should play. Maybe the association hasn't been set up for some reason. When you click on 'Open with', browse to c:\program files\Macromedia\Flash MX\Players\ and select 'saflashplayer.exe'.
If you don't find it there, do a search for 'saflashplayer.exe'. If you don't find it, maybe something went wrong with the install.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP! Sorry, I do not check for private messages
