My machine completely shuts off during a virus scan.
I was originally using Norton System Works 2005 and uninstalled it after having the problem.
I am now using AVAST Home edition and am still having the problem but the scan does last a bit longer before the machine turns off.
My machine also passed a spyware scan.
Any suggestions?

Thank you for the suggestion. I followed your response and ran the scan via the safe mode. Unfortunately, the computer still shut off.

I would suggest doing a online scan to see if there may be something shutting it down when it reaches a certain file ?

Have you went to windows update lately? The last time I went there I thought there was an update for an issue with a virus scan or firewall.

I appreciate all of the suggestions.
My machine is apparently is up to date. I also now tried the Housecall software mentioned in one of the suggestions above and had the same shut off problem. I am not against doing a full system restore at this point.

don't do a full system restore. it doesn't work, and then you have to put things back on that you to keep. I am having the same problem with my Compaq Presario, it wants to shut down on it's own anytime it wants. I think maybe there is a bug but haven't chosen a program for detection yet. Anybody else got any ideas on what could be the problem??

What is scary is that I have a compaq presario as well. You are making me think that maybe the problem has nothing to do with the virus scan.

I have been reading through other forums posted at other websites. Our problem may be temperature related.

You problem is definitely temp related. Try taking one side of the case off. If you have a desk with a special 'cpu' location, consider taking both sides off. Also, look in the BIOS settings, you can generally tune these systems from there. There are also programs that come with motherboards that read the temperature sensors built into your motherboard. Consider looking up who makes the motherboard that is in your machine, going to their website, and downloading the free program.

I have the same problem, the computer shut off without any warning message as if I unplugged the power cord, and I have a Motherboard analisys software that keep track of the CPU and MB temperature, and it seem all right, also when I start a virus scan it doesnt end, it shut off first, if any had tried something that works, please tell me.

Man... I came here for an answer.. Haha. I have done all the things suggested already. I am baffled. My system runs fine except for the times I run a virus scan. If I find the answer I will definatly post it!!!

P.S
To all you poor Presario owners out there... Sorry, but I suggest that you reformat the drive and do a fresh install. As a computer tech I have found that this is the best way to deal with the various Presario "bugs"...

Hi me again!!! Thanks Akosnitzky! My problem is tempeture related. I took the cover off and voila! I can run a virus scan! Silly me I should have known.

For those still having a related problem. Check your fans and make sure they are running. Do this visually and in the Bios. They should be running at 100% Also make sure that your CPU temp is below 70C / 160F.
Mine was at an average of 72C when I had the problem. Now it is at 60C and my computer is running fine! Good luck!
