machine POWERED OFF during xp setup?!

when i tried to install xp... everything was fine (compatibility test, copying setup files...) until the first reboot. after the setup rebooted the first time. the actual setup began with the xp logo... but the machine just powered off the next second and with no further activity. so, i turned the computer back on and it happened again. (setup screen loaded and powered off).
i've unplugged all cards and cd-rom/rw with just the video card and harddisk left. but the same thing happened...
does anyone know what could be the problem? could it be my video card (3d blaster banshee) but how come the compatibility test didn't say anything about it?
