Lynksys adapter WPC54GS

Specs: XP HOME, 240GH2/2.56
My laptop was awefully slow. My friend suspected virus and did hp reinstall. Every thing works well but I am not able to access internet. The adapter is idle but cannot be connected.
Please help me to activate the adapter.

Are you connected wirelessly?
If so, have you configured the wireless adapter (encryption)?
Otherwise, on cable connection, you shouldn't have any problem.

Yes the driver is installed.
How to configure wireless adapter(encryption).My friend who did the reinstall has left.Please help me.I am not aware of all these.I have Linksys -Creating a Profile with remarks"searching" but not running.

Depending on the wireless router, you're using.
But you didn't mention, what router you have.

What you need to know is the encryption key and the SSID (the network name, the router uses), if you used wireless connection in the past.
This can be figured out in the routers setup.

When I'm right, there are several modem/routers named at&t 2wire gateway.
Is yours the wireless modem router?

I checked the website and I am sorry I do not find the internet icon there. Device Manager does not show network adapter. Probalby the adapter software is not installed due to some reason. How to rectify the erroe?
